Our approach to teaching physical education (PE) is to give children the tools and understanding required to enjoy positive physical health and wellbeing.
We want all of ourstudents to enjoy activity and to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills which will enhance lifelong fitness and life choices.
Our goal is for our students to be happy and to enjoy PE, facing and taking on challenges that promote self esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. Participation in sport and PE teaches children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based activities - key and transferable life skills.
Throughout Key Stage 3 our students will develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities including invasion games, trampolining, net and wall, striking and fielding and athletics.
In years 7, 8 and 9, students will develop a knowledge of rules and regulations and technique skills and movements. They will learn to explore and communicate new ideas, identify, review and solve problems and perform at maximum levels.
Students will be assessed practically after every sport against sport specific assessment criteria.
Once a term students will be assessed on non skill based criteria (communication, leadership, evaluation, awareness of space, teamwork and sportsmanship and a homework review.
All students continue to study PE as a core subject in Key Stage 4 for one hour per week, and will participate in a range of sporting activities.
Students can also choose to complete either a BTEC Sport or GCSE PE as part of their KS4 options.
The BTEC Sport First Award will introduce students to topics including fitness for sport and exercise, practical performance in sport, the principles of personal training and leading sports activities. Students are assessed through a combination of practical performance, coursework and one external exam.
Students who complete a GCSE PE will develop their theoretical knowledge and understanding of the physiological and psychological factors that affect performance and how socio-cultural influences impact people’s involvement in sport and wellbeing.
Learning also includes the human body and movement in physical activity and sport. GCSE PE is assessed by a combination of practical work and examination.
