The week of activities didn’t disappoint…we learnt from the author Daniel Rachel about how ‘2 Tones’ record label was instrumental in creating an inclusive environment, breaking down barriers and playing a role in the liberation of Nelson Mandela. We went on a Street Art Tour around Brick Lane which is a melting pot for cultural references. We found out why immigrants made the East End their home and how it evolved from a Victorian slum to its’ present-day trend-setting district. We got to see everything from massive murals that cover entire buildings, to smaller, hidden pieces that you wouldn’t know were there, and of course a couple of Banksy’s along the way!
On Thursday night, students and families came together for our Casino Night event, where all the hard work rehearsing paid off. Everyone had a great time. Finally, on Friday, we created a plan for our return to Cologne and worked on ideas on how we will showcase the work done in both schools. It was a time to reflect on what had been an inspiring week, of learning about diverse and interesting cultures.
A big thank you to UK-German Connection who have given us funding to enable this project to come to life and to all the students, families and staff who have worked together to make it happen.
